The Soeks brand radaition dosimiters are very popular in the geiger counter field. In particular, the Defender model is one of the most sought after for its great features at an affordable price.
Radiation measurement
The Soeks Defender is designed to measure cumulative radiation dose and the assessment of radioactivity levels for any item, and detecting objects, food items and construction materials contaminated with radioactive elements. The Defender gauges radioactivity levels based on ion radiation intensity (gamma radiation and beta particle stream) and x-ray radiation levels. Measurements made with the device display exact background radiation levels in μSv/h or μR/h along with a message describing the level of background radiation:
Purchase a brand you can depend on. Soeks Geiger Counters were awarded model of the Year 2011 due to their outstanding performance and high levels of precision. While typical radiation detectors display exposure dosage ranging from 5 to 1,000 μR/h, Soeks devices exhibit a much higher level of precision, displaying the range from 5 to 100,000 μR/h.
Geiger Counters from Soeks stand apart with a color display, graphical representation of measurements, and 127 measurement points.
Note: Many standard issue devices of this type built in Russia have radioactive sensors made in the 80’s following the Chernobyl disaster, and their life cycle is swiftly coming to an end. In contrast, Soeks Radiation Detectors possess sensors that are up-to-date and significantly more accurate.

I had been look looking for cost-effective radiation detector for general survey purposes for quite some time. Most of the units in my general price range were older analog display designs (not digital) that seemed dated . Full-featured digital units were all priced well above my budget.
The Soeks Defender seems to be a good value and I'm pleased with my purchase. Extremely compact, the Soeks unit combines the proven Russian SBM - 20 - 01 GM tube with modern Chinese sourced TFT display and electronics.
On testing I found that the unit is quite sensitive to hard beta and gamma sources with a crystal-clear readout and good graphic functions. The dosimeter function is a nice feature.
Compared to the Radex detector that I also looked at the graphic display of the Soeks is much superior with a menu driven interface that is self explanatory.
Negatives are really quite few for this unit. The plastic case is a bit flimsy however, so I would definitely avoid any impacts or dropping it from even a modest distance. I keep mine in the small leather pouch that I used to use for a camera . Otherwise I think this is a great value and will be using it often .
