Geiger Counter – How To Use

Micro Sieverts are the choice measurement of radiation exposure. The Greek Mu symbol, used for Micro, is hard to find, so we use a lower case u to mean Micro and a lower case m to mean mili. Measurements of uSv/hr (micro sieverts per hour) of 0.01 uSv/Hr to 0.5 uSv/Hr are quite normal and no cause for alarm. If you have the same counter as me, you can divide these numbers by ten to get the milirems, if you want to. Therefore, 0.15 uSv/hr = 0.015 mrem/hr. Also, using my counter, you can divide counts per minute, CPM, by 100 to get uSv/hr: 22 CPM = 0.22 uSv/hr = 0.022 mrem/hr. Simple! If you see more than 100 CPM, 1.0 uSv/hr, or 0.1 mrem/hr, you might want to move away from what ever is producing it. Always wash your hands, never touch the probe to an item (you can contaminate it that way), you cannot read something too slowly, and a counter not turned on reads nothing… always leave it on! PLEASE feel free to ask me anything you want about how to use one!!! Tom from Anti-Proton.com

  1. @BobbiBeach I can’t find scubecuba. Any better link? He may have a bad, not calibrated, or even contaminated GM counter. Scintilators also read larger numbers due to their size (more area) and sensitivity. I am getting low readings.

  2. I would love to know your thoughts on what Dutchsinse is doing. Would you mind checking a few of his recent videos? Any way of telling if he’s doing things correctly?
